BHMK Law’s physical office is now open and operating on a modified basis. Most of our attorneys and staff have returned to the office and are on site to serve your needs, while those who are not continue to work remotely and take advantage of the technology investments we have made over the last few years. We are limiting the number of persons in the office at one time and have created special protocols around client visits to the office. Please discuss your needs and our protocols with your attorney or staff member. We are proud to continue to serve you at this time and continue to prioritize the health and safety of our clients, staff, and attorneys.

EEOC hits a record high in new charges, but reduces case load again

| Jan 26, 2012 | Business & Employment Law |

Yesterday, EEOC released its 2011 statistical report ( http://eeoc.gov/eeoc/newsroom/release/1-24-12a.cfm ) showing that it accepted an all-time high in total charges of discrimination by employees against their employers. However, EEOC also resolved more charges in 2011 (112,499) than it took in through new charge filings. EEOC also trumpeted in its release of a record $455.6 million in relief for private sector, state, and local employees and applicants, an increase of more than $51 million from FY2010 and continuing the upward trend of the past three fiscal years. Inside the charge statistics, claims of race and gender discrimination were down, while disability and age discrimination charges increased in 2011.

If your business is covered under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, or the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act or if you are unsure which of the foregoing apply to your business, contacting one of our attorneys can assist you in determining how to proceed in a work environment where EEOC, OCRC, DOL, and other governmental agencies are increasing their enforcement efforts. Guidance and action before the receipt of a charge or investigation notice is critical to protecting your investment in your business. – Brian R. Redden
